Cover Letter Follow-Up Lands Interviews and Job Offers
I know I was scared and breathless the first time I called to follow-up on a help-wanted ad. Having closed my resume business I had decided to go into the personnel field.
I answered an ad for a Personnel Coordinator with a national placement agency.
The ad listed the street address but didn't include the company name or phone number.
When a week had passed and I hadn't received a call I got out the yellow pages. Within a few minutes I found the agency's name and phone number.
The ad had stated, "No calls, please" which made me uncomfortable and increased my anxiety. But, I really wanted that job so I called and spoke with Mr. Grant, the owner of the agency, who asked me why I thought I could do the job.
Feeling shaky, I jumped in and told him I had owned a business writing resumes and had marketed over 1,500 job seekers, many of whom had generated 7 to 14 times as many interviews.
This, combined with my knowledge of hundreds of industries and job requirements would allow me to quickly step in and market employees applying for positions through his personnel agency.
He seemed quite interested and said, "Well, I do have someone in mind and I believe we'll hire her, but why don't you come in tomorrow." Wow!
Was I happy when I got off the phone.
To make the rest of this story short I spent three hours at his office the next day, then had a second lunch interview that took two hours, and a final interview that took an hour and a half.
I got the job because I took my fear by the horns, found the agency's phone number, and followed-up.
