Imagine that an employer wants A, B, C, D, and E skills. In your resume or your cover letter you address only A, D and E.
But, in fact, you have B and C skills. If you leave out B and C, and your competitors highlight all the skills - A, B, C, D and E - in their cover letters and resumes who looks more qualified? They do.
If you find an ad, or opening, for a position that you really want, be sure that both your cover letter and resume address, as closely as possible, the top 4 to 5 skills the employer is requesting.
If you don't have a direct match to one of the skills - highlight a skill that is related.
For example, Sandy found an ad for an Executive Secretary that requested experience supporting CEO's and Senior Management staff. She hadn't worked with staff at that level but had worked with Division Managers in 3 states.
She could label her experience Executive Support to Division Management. This presents an image that Sandy can support key management staff and handle top level responsibility which is what the employer really wanted.
If you feel you are weak in one skill area, find an area in your background that has some thread of experience that does relate, then market that experience rather than leaving holes in your qualifications.
By providing a full-range of your skills you'll elevate and control the image you present.
