The Importance Of Customizing Your Letters
You will generate a far higher response rate by customizing your
cover letters and resumes and even your applications for those positions that are widely different from one another.
In my last job search, I generated a 100% response rate competing with 600 applicants for four very different positions.
Job seekers in my classes have also reported a significant increase in cover
letter and interview response rates--many reporting 50% to 75% response rates--after they began customizing their
cover letters and application packages.
Because each employer and each industry may have differing skill requirements or concerns, it makes sense that by addressing how your skills match their unique
needs in your cover letter--that you will generate more interviews.
However, most people don't put this much effort into applying for
jobs or writing cover letters or resumes. One, because they're not sure the
effort in writing a targeted cover letter will make any difference and two, because many people just won't take the time needed to shape the image presented in each of their cover letters, resumes and applications.
From my own experience and from what hundreds of job seekers have told me, customizing
cover letters often makes the difference between landing interviews and not landing
them--as well as increasing the level of pay being offered.
