When job seekers receive poor responses to their resumes and cover letters they sometimes feel they have to go to extraordinary lengths to get an employer's attention.
However, these strategies are usually gimmicky and don't work in cover letters. I've tested opening cover letter paragraphs like those below and employers have consistently said they don't like them.
Employers often say such statements make the person seem desperate or too slick
when reading a cover letter.
They also say these statements seem much better suited for a flyer you'd get in the mail than in a professional cover letter. If you follow the cover letter strategies you're learning you won't need to resort to
gimmicks (see the links below).
DON’T: If you're looking for a top salesman who can double your sales - I'm the person to call.
DON'T: People often tell me that I'm the best manager they've ever hired. Give me a call and you'll be convinced I can turn your company's losses into profits - in no time flat.
DON'T: Need a secretary who can handle pressure, solve problems and manage details? If so, put my 10+ years of administrative skills to work in your office.
DO: Enclosed please find my resume for the
Executive Secretary position you recently advertised.
