Covering letters are used to introduce yourself and explain to employers why you are contacting them.
Many employers won't accept a resume if it is not submitted with a covering letter.
In today's job market, proper business etiquette requires that you include a covering letter with your
resume. If you don't include a covering letter it implies that you are not familiar with the business world and can lead to your being rejected as a candidate.
Employers
may read your covering letter first, before looking at your
resume, so your covering letter has to sell you just as powerfully as
your resume. This is a key issue that may job seekers do not think
about.
Covering letters are more difficult to write than a resume
(resumes are easier because you are usually using your work
history to guide you).
Because covering letters are more difficult to write, many job seekers fall
into a rambling narrative that does not work and covering letters
FAIL because they do not address the specifics that each
employer needs.
With employers receiving 100's of resumes, possibly 1000's for every publicly advertised positions, due to our economy.
Your
covering letter must stand out and sell you in seconds. Again something that most cover letters FAIL at doing.
To create covering letters, like those I've created for my clients
who have received pay increases of $2,000 to $80,000 more per year
- you must
identify what employers need and then prove how you meet those
needs. Copying someone else's covering letter is another reason most
cover letters FAIL because you don't sell your unique skills.
Writing generic covering letters or

needs and your top qualifications, experience, achievements and
traits that make you excel (not someone else's
experience).

covering letters doesn't work because it's easy and people often believe
