Below is an analysis of a job advertisement to create an
executive cover letter.
To analyze the executive ad, my client underlined all skills
and experience in the ad he possessed. Then using that
information I created a list of the keywords and skills from
the ad to create skill headings for his executive cover
letter.
Next, I used those skill headings to create his executive
cover letter. Once I created the paragraph headings /
skill headings for the executive cover letter, I matched his
experience to the keywords and skill requirements to create
the executive cover letter paragraph content.
I believe cover letters, for executives, as well as all
other jobs are often harder to write than resumes.
Mainly because you have to write in a narrative cover letter
style rather than the more bulleted style used in
resumes.
Good executive cover letters, as well as all cover letters,
should demonstrate and prove why you are qualified for the
job. An attention grabbing executive cover letter also
must use great cover letter design - such as bolding of
headings to make the letter stand out among 100's to 1000's
of other executive cover letters.
Again, this sample is extracted from my book, Proven Resumes
Strategies That Have Increased Salaries. The cover
letter strategies in my book have been responsible for
helping clients raise their pay $2,000 to $80,000 more per
year. If you compare this CEO / General Manager to the
vast majority of cover letters, you'll see why these
strategies do increase salaries and land more interviews.

If you're having difficulty creating a resume and
cover letter - you
might consider hiring me to write your resume - I've written
executive resumes for GMs, CEOs, CFOs, VPs, Director Level
positions and management positions (10,000 to 15,000 resumes
and cover letters) This page details all that I do
with executive clients to write effective resumes and cover
letters.

As
you can see, to create the executive cover letter, we've
underlined the skills in the ad that should be highlighted
and marketed in the executive cover letter. I
recommend executive clients gather numerous ads, underline all skills,
and then use them as a basis to write high impact executive
cover letters.
Now
let's look at the executive cover letter - you'll see how I
used the bolded paragraph headings to sell key skills from the
executive job ad as well as the underlined skills to create strong
cover letter content. Name is fictitious and content
of the ad and the cover letter have been changed.

95%
OF EXECUTIVE LETTERS FAIL
|
|
|
95%
of executive cover letters fail because executives
haven't taken the time to analyze what employers want
and need and by matching and selling skills that match
those needs. Job ads are a great way to write a
more powerful resume.
Many executives try to present an overview of their
experience in their executive covering letter, but
that experience is often haphazardly thrown together
without building a convincing case for their skills
and how they are a direct or very strong match to what
employers need.
That's one reason why so many executives get so
few responses to their cover letters. The job market
itself is often not as bleak as people think. It's not
that jobs aren't there or that people applying aren't
qualified. Rather, it's because applicants don't know
how to create covering letters that grab an employer's
or recruiter's immediate attention, makes them think,
'This candidate is a great match,' and make them pick
up the phone!!
The executive with the best qualifications isn't
necessarily the executive that's hired or called for
an interview. It's the person who presents his
qualifications in the most convincing way that is
interviewed and hired.
