To create your cover letter, gather 5-10 job ads for the
jobs you want. Then underline all skills in each job
ad that you possess and use this information to create
strong cover letter paragraph headings and cover letter
content.
When you have completed your cover letter, graph your response to the main headings and statements in your
cover letter, just as we did with Fran's cover
letters. In this way, you can be reassured that the
image created by your cover letter matches the jobs and
salary you want.
If any heading or statement makes your image drop significantly, create a stronger
cover letter heading or cover letter statement.
Your cover letter doesn't have to be perfectly on target. If some of your skills just aren't a direct 100% match--that's OK--you can still generate a great
response with your cover letter.
That's because most cover letters are very off base and misdirected. I've seen great responses to cover letters that only highlighted two of the primary skills required yet individuals still generated many interviews over average response rates.
Even if you have only have a few of the important skills required, highlight them and get those cover letters out there!
Continue presenting a professional image by using a soft
white or stark white linen 24# paper - something that feels
substantial but won't break your bank! Avoid gray or speckled paper because it doesn't fax,
scan or transmit well.
