In an instant, which
description will convey much more about your skills and abilities?
Which person looks more qualified and worth a higher salary?
This is a very simple example but illustrates the powerful strategies
presented in this site that teach you how to understand, control
and elevate your image to match the job and salary you want.
Again, if you haven't already gone through our workshops click
the first link in the left column above to do so!
GOOD TIP: A good tip to grab the employers
attention is to type the skill heading you want an employer to
notice in all caps and then to highlight it with a yellow highlighter
(but do this very neatly). This will grab the employers
attention as soon as he glances at the application. Highlight
only two to three items per page in the application. Again, be
sure you've made copies and decided exactly how you want the
application to be completed before marking on the original application.
Most Important!
Be sure
that you have identified the top 5-10 skills required for the
job you are applying for. Then throughout your application make
sure that the descriptions you give of each job youve held
highlight skills and experience that match the job you want.
For more details on identifying skills go through our first set
of workshops by clicking the first link in the left hand column
above.
More Common
Sense Tips for Completing Your Application
Since you have very limited space on an application be sure to
make several copies of it. To squeeze in the most information
be sure to type your application. Practice filling out the application
and writing each section of it until you get the most important
information written as briefly as possible.
When completing job applications be aware that some employers
judge your handwriting. How meticulous you are in preparing your
application can be viewed as how meticulous you'll be as an employee
on the job. Spelling errors and sloppy handwriting results in
many job seekers being screened out of initial interviews. Therefore,
its best if your application is typed. If you must complete
an application by hand do it in printing unless your cursive
handwriting is very clear and legible.
If you hand in an application with coffee spills on it, smudged
writing or sloppy writing, employers are likely to assume that
you won't provide attention to detail on the job either.
Always include a resume and a cover letter with your application.
Follow the tips and strategies presented in our workshops to
create top-notch resumes and cover letters!
Never write "see resume" across your application or
anywhere on your application. Some employers won't accept or
review applications that aren't complete. If you won't take the
time to accurately complete even a job application--what does
that say to an employer about your interest in the job and your
dedication to being a hard worker? Fill-out your applications
completely and thoroughly.
Work History
Problems
If you have gaps between jobs or have held too many jobs, explain
why if it will help repair your image. For example, if you have
held numerous jobs while completing your education and paid your
own tuition by doing so you might write this in the section that
asks Reason for Leaving:
Reason
for Leaving
Worked and paid my tuition through college. My class schedule
changed but my workshift could not be changed, therefore I applied
and was hired for a position that met my class time schedule. |
Anticipate
How Employer's Will Respond to Your Weaknesses
Complete a "fake" application and then take some time
to decide the image that employers will have of you based on
your application. Does it present you as well qualified? Do your
job titles match the job you want? Do you have employment history
problems? Has your salary been too high or low in comparison
to the job you want? Do you look qualified for the salary you
want?
You might also ask your instructors or other people who can give
you solid feedback to look at your application and answer these
questions. Wherever, you find a weakness offset it by focusing
on a strength that you do have to offer.
My newest book, Proven Resumes - Strategies That Have Increased
Salaries provides many resume tips that can help you deal with
such issues. One chapter is titled, What to Tell and What Not
To Tell Employers. It provides a wealth of strategies and tips
for dealing with employment problems.
Why
Are Applications Important, Anyway?
Employers
or human resource departments that do extensive, ongoing hiring
use applications because each application is the same and interviewers
know just where to look on the application to obtain a particular
piece of information about a candidate. Thats why completing
applications thoroughly and accurately is very important.
Take Your
Resume and Reference List With You When Completing Applications
When
applying for work, be sure to take your resume and reference
list with you so that you have your work history and reference
contact information available. If you make a mistake, ask for
another application and start over unless you can correct the
mistake without making the application look messy. At home, make
a copy before starting. Then complete the copy and transfer the
information youve written on it to the original application
form. Remember to keep a copy of the completed application to
use when you complete applications in the future.
Should
I Provide Salary Information?
Applications
often ask for salary history. If the salaries you have been paid
in past jobs are not a close match to the salary you want, youre
usually better off not providing salary figures. Instead use
statements like these:

Will
Discuss During Interview - Will Negotiate - Flexible |
