Does Your Resume Suck?

Are You Losing $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000 in Low Salary Offers?

Job titles, skills, and experience descriptions in your resume can cause you to lose $2,000 to $20,000 or more due to low salary offers.  That happened to Tammy.  Her old resume caused her to lose interviews for jobs paying $20,000 more while her new resume landed a position paying that much more.  Click here to see if your resume is costing you $2,000 to $20,000 in low salary levels or isn't landing the interviews you want!

To learn if your resume is working, let's continue educating you via Tammy's example.  Her old resume generated interviews for jobs paying $20,000 less than she wanted.  To understand why her resume didn't work, let's graph our response to it based on her goal of wanting a $40,000 Outside Sales position with a Credit Bureau.

In the graph above, what happens when we see Personnel Recruiter for a temporary placement agency, does Tammy's image go up or down?  What happens when we see Placement Specialist for another temporary placement agency, does Tammy's image go up or down?  What happens when we see Customer Service Representative for a major retailer, does Tammy's image go up or down?  Most people say these titles do not match Tammy's goal of Outside Sales with a Credit Bureau (the last title fits somewhat but sounds like a clerk, so while it's better, is still sounds weak).  What salary range does Tammy sound qualified for based on these job titles?  Most people say $20,000.  As a result, Tammy has created a resume that markets her $20,000 below her goal of $40,000. (What salary level does your resume market you at?)

Now look at the graph above.  We replaced Personnel Recruiter with Outside Sales Representative because Tammy was actually doing outside sales (marketing the placement agency to large companies who hire temporary or permanent staff).  Does the title Outside Sales Representative match her goal of Outside Sales?  Next we used Key Account Management as a skill heading rather than the title of Placement Specialist (Tammy was actually doing outside sales to major accounts hiring temporaries).  Last, we used the title of Credit Representative instead of Customer Service Representative because Credit Representative is much stronger but is also truthful (Tammy approved over $1/4 million in credit for a high-end department store).  These new titles and skill heading keep Tammy's image inline with her $40,000 salary goal and resulted in a job paying $20,000 more!

This image/graphing concept can be applied to your resume whether you make  $10.00 an hour and want a $12.00 an hour job or whether you are an executive making $120,000 and want a $150,000 job.  If you read my testimonials, you'll find that these techniques do work at all income and job levels.

Want To See More Strategies That Increased Salaries?
If you've read the before and after graphics above, then you've learned how Tammy's old resume was costing her $20,000 in low salary offers … while her new resume landed her a job paying $20,000 more.  If you are serious about learning resume strategies that have substantially increased job seeker salaries and landed more interviews, then take the time to review another example that elevated Fran's salary level by $9,000.  You'll learn how to improve your own resume and get top results by analyzing Fran's before and after resumes.

How do you learn to control your image?
Using this graphing technique is one great way … but most people need a step by step process that teaches them how to understand, control and elevate their image (I provide this in detail in my book).  I provide tidbits of information throughout my site, which will whet your appetite, but they don't come close to scratching the surface of what's in 300+ pages of my Increase Salaries Series. You'll find that and far more in my book:  Proven Resumes:  Strategies That Have Increased Salaries for $9.95.

First you'll be given worksheets that show you how to list your goals and then graph your titles and work history to see if they match your goal.  Then you'll be provided with worksheets and tons of skill lists for 40 industries that help you replace weak job titles with skill headings that match your job and salary goals.  You'll be shown step by step how to identify the skills employers want and then shown how to market your skills to match what employers want (this is often referred to as your transferable skills).  Dozens of questions help you create powerful descriptions of your experience so that you continue to control and elevate the image presented throughout your entire resume.

Detailed analyses of job ads, teach you how to become an expert at knowing what key job titles, skills and experience employers want … and how to market your experience so that it matches employers want.

You'll learn how to convert your resume into an electronic version that gets results.  One client recently sent me an email saying he had used Proven Resumes:  Strategies That Increase Salaries.  He said his old electronic resume generated 2 hits in 2 months but after using the Electronic Resume booklet to rewrite his new resume he had generated over 40 hits and it had only been online a week!

The job of controlling the image you present to employers isn't over with your resume and cover letter.  You must also be prepared to control the image you present during interviews.  The Interviewing chapter of my book, continues to guide you in answering interview questions and includes a graph of an unsuccessful interview compared to a successful one and why the successful interview worked!

In between the resume, cover letter and landing an interview--you have to get out there and find the jobs you want--my book teaches you the most effective off-line and on-line job search methods.

What is the cost of my book $9.95 (was $27.80) when you compare it to the salary increase you may be able to generate?  If you land a job paying only $1,000 more, that's over 3,500% return on your investment!

Don't Feel Confident or Have Time to Write Your Own Resume?
Before you hire a writer--be aware--very few resume writers understand how to control and elevate your image to match the jobs and salary you want!  You probably understand this concept better, after having read this example, than most resume writers!

Also, many resume writing firms contract out their resume writing and give little if any training to their writing crew, who may receive only $15 to $45 for a resume that the client is charged $95 to $450 for (I do all resume writing myself--your resume never leaves my hands!).

Don't assume that someone who says they're a resume writer
knows this stuff because most don't!

1) Ask how many resumes that person has written and for what salary levels.
2) Ask what type of successes the writer has generated for clients (I've written over 6,000 resumes for entry to executive level--if you read my testimonials you'll learn first hand my successes).
3) Ask if the writer has authored a book and how successful is it (my book sells hundreds of orders through this site each month and that's continually growing.  I've written 13 books and over 400 sets of my instructor transparency materials have been sold to employment security, workforce offices, and universities).
4) Do they provide signed testimonials with the real person's name (anyone can write anything if they only attach initials to the testimonial).  My testimonials are from real people and career professionals who have given me written approval to use their names and testimonial.
5) What is the writer's standing in the career field?  I'm considered to be a master trainer in resume and job search strategies by employment security offices, universities and corporations.
