|CHOROLOGICAL RESUME FORMAT|
A chronological resume starts with your current position and goes backward listing each job/position you've held. This format is the most widely accepted format by employers for 3 reasons. Employers are most familiar with it than any other style. It provides dates of employment which many employers like to see. It is the easiest to prepare since it requires less creative than a functional resume or a skills resume.
The chronological format includes dates of employment which can emphasize and reflect well on a strong and stable work history. It can also emphasize many years of employment in a desired field because dates of employment are prominently displayed. It can draw positive attention to promotion and career growth by focusing job chronology and progression of job titles. In addition, many employers prefer this format because it is easy for them to understand where you gained each achievement or area of experience.
The chronological resume has several disadvantages for someone with an erratic or short work history or unrelated work history. Because dates are prominently displayed employers can see gaps in employment within seconds of looking at the resume (it helps to use year to year dates rather than month to month to de-emphasize gaps in employment). An employer can see the gaps in employment - this can set off resume red flags and result in the resume/candidate not being considered.
This format can be redundant if you have held many similar positions. The chronological resume can also result in a weak resume if your job titles are not impressive and do not support your objective (in this case you need to replace weak job titles with strong skill headings). A chronological doesn't work well if you want to to emphasize other areas of experience - that job titles don't illustrate. Dates can draw attention to the fact that you have not worked in field for a long period of time. If your current experience doesn't relate to your career goals the chronological format may weaken your image - resulting in no or fewer interviews.
