The functional resume format is based on skill groups and skill headings and can provide a list of employers (your employment history) but omits dates of employment. It also eliminates the need for a job by job listing as required in the chronological resume format. Below you'll see a functional resume sample. This format is very effective in de-emphasizing erratic or unrelated work history as well as re-entry into the job market after a long absence. When using this format you must present your skills in a way that overcomes any concerns an employer may have about your not listing your work history. The content and skills in a functional resume must convince an employer that your skills, achievements and experience makes you worth calling. ADVANTAGES Because the functional resume format eliminates dates of employment it can de-emphasize erratic or older work experience. It can also be an excellent choice if you have no work or little work experience. DISADVANTAGES The functional format is not as well received by employers as the chronological or combination resume because it leaves off dates of employment.
