When I was still teaching resume writing workshops, I was amazed when I asked this question of the students writing their resumes! I'd go into a class where they had already written their resumes as a guest speaker, and I'd ask if they had identified the Top 5 Skill Requirements for the jobs they wanted. Most would look totally shocked - as they realized their resume might not have even addressed the top 5 skills! When asked this question for their resumes - many didn't even know the Top 5 Skills required. To help you make sure you have answered this question in your resume - gather together 5-10 job ads for the jobs you want. Underline all skills in them that you possess or that the ads are asking for that you know you can do. Then count how many times each skill has come up across all job ads. In this way, it's easy to identify the Top 5 Skills required for the jobs you want. Be sure to take the time to ask yourself this question and answer it when writing a resume - you can imagine how important this in landing more interviews, pay raises and better job opportunities!
