One of my biggest successes has been helping one client go
from $80,000 to $160,000 in one job move. I'll call him John and his
sample resume and specifics have been dramatically changed below to maintain
confidentiality and provide an sample of the type of strategy we
used to write his resume. John was seeking a higher level
construction project manager position for commercial and
industrial construction - in the sample resume below - you'll see
the issues John faced are typical of other job seekers.
John's story
illustrates the
complexity of writing powerful resumes and why just
skimming resume sites and copying resume samples doesn't work -
here or anywhere else. Each person needs to analyze their
resume weaknesses and identify the strengths and experience they
have to offer - not just copy a sample resume you think looks
good. Job seekers must understand how to control and
elevate the image their resume projects - and that can't be
learned by copying random resume samples.
|
| Challenges
with Old Sample Resume |
|
John had
several challenges with his background and knew they would cause
him problems when applying for a position as a Construction Project Manager
at a higher pay level - some of them
included:
|
> |
Being out of his chosen field for 5 years and currently working in an
unrelated field. |
|
> |
Having excellent qualifications in the construction field but only in a
specific area. |
|
> |
His old resume focused on that area rather than the overall
experience he had in the construction field which narrowed an
employers' image of his ability to coordinate all trades and
subcontractors across large scale projects. |
|
> |
His old resume didn't quantify the size and scope of the
projects he had worked on. |
|
> |
His old resume didn't describe all of the major stakeholders he
had coordinated with (owners, architects, site superintendents,
subcontractors/master trades professionals). |
|
> |
His old resume didn't convey the knowledge of building codes he
possessed. |
So even though not everyone may be familiar with a construction
project manager - you can see that his sample resume had numerous
difficulties to overcome. Successfully addressing these
issues resulted in a $160,000 salary offer.

John's
New Resume
Jumped Him 2 Levels Above the Job He Applied For |
|
When
called for an interview, John was jumped 2 levels above the job he
applied for ... there are more successes like this in my testimonials
page. Writing John's new sample resume, we focused on these key
areas of experience and achievements:
|
> |
His comprehensive knowledge of the subcontractors and trades
required for commercial and industrial construction and large
scale projects ranging to $280 million and the integration of
trades across all phases of such projects. |
|
> |
Focusing immediately on John's construction project management
experience with a powerful branding / summary of qualifications
section we de-emphasized his being out of this field for 5 years. |
|
> |
We quantified all aspects of the projects he managed in $ value
and square feet. |
|
> |
Including all key stakeholders he worked with elevated his image
and demonstrated level of responsibility. |
|
> |
One of the key areas John had excelled in was his knowledge of
commercial and industrial building codes and innate ability to
absorb complex information as well as his working directly with
commercial building code and permit departments. |
|
| Identifying
Employers' Hidden Needs |
|
As
described in other pages in this site, I recommend job seekers not
only analyze their experience and learn to quantify it, analyze
job ads to identify skills and experience employers are looking
for, and also work to identify each employer's hidden needs. Many
times, you'll find that a job ad repeats a problem area the
employer is facing and it may be addressed and slightly reworded 3
or 4 times or more.
For example, a construction manager job ad might address the ability to build effective
project partnerships and excellent relationships with Architects,
Inspectors, Owners & Subcontractors - but it will be worded
different each time it's mentioned.
So a construction manager could ask himself, 'In what projects or
jobs did my building relationships with stakeholders save a project, cut
project costs or
prevent design build errors? What could be this employer's hidden
needs?'
Following the sample resume objective, sample summary of
qualifications, or sample branding section below, John's resume went on to
describe the size of projects he worked on in each position.

Resume Job Ad | |
Reading John's new objective / resume branding / summary of qualifications
section, you can see how much more powerful the new sample resume
is. Which resume would you pick up at a glance? Which
resume sample makes John look like he's worth a higher salary?
Now let's analyze a job ad that John has all the experience for -
and underline all skills and experience in the ad that he
possesses:
|
Construction Project Manager - 10+ years experience
in large-scale commercial and industrial construction.
Managing design, build and installation. Ensuring
systems interface properly. Managing high
volume of small projects. Working effectively
with Architects, Inspectors and Project Stakeholders.
Proven cost savings abilities. Good
communicator with ability to identify and resolve project
issues. |

Resume: Branding & Strategy Development
A proven strategy had to be identified and implemented for John to brand
his background and showcase how closely his experience met
the requirements of the Construction Project Manager
position he wanted. John had to demonstrate and sell his specific knowledge and experience
to put him ahead of other applicants applying for the job
With
the global economic recession impacting the U.S. and the world, job
seekers must position themselves, their knowledge and their experience
as a top candidate who must be interviewed - and one of the best ways to
do this is by analyzing the job ad - as the employer is
telling you what he/she needs and wants to hear.
Merely finding sample resumes and copying them wouldn't have resulted
in the success John achieved with this resume because he
wouldn't have ensured his resume sold all of the skills each
employer required as he would never have analyzed the
job ad.
Each
job seeker has his or her own story, and specific
achievements that can put them heads above other applicants and it's
this that needs to be pulled out and sold in a resume in addition to
quantifying using $, # and %. You must know yourself to sell
yourself! ... not only in your resume but in interviews!
Most
People Cannot Elevate Their Image on Their Own
Most
people feel overwhelmed trying to do this for
themselves. Once they sit down to work on their new
resumes they see and feel how complex writing a great resume
really is. If you are in the $60,000 to $100,000+ range then be sure to
read my executive resume service page and then hit back to
return here. You might also want to read a full list
of sample resume problems on that page to see how many problems your resume has.
If you need help writing your resume - consider hiring me -
my fee is $250 for clients in this pay range.
A key difference in my resume writing service, is that I
work to educate clients so that they understand the
importance of elevating and controlling the image presented
by their resumes. This knowledge paves the foundation
for job winning interviews ... because 1st you have to sell
yourself visually on paper and then sell yourself verbally
in interviews. I include my book as part of my service
and encourage clients to read my 1st chapter on Image
Control and when they get ready for interviews, that they
read the interviewing chapter. It is quite dynamic in
preparing job seekers for questions and how to verbally sell
themselves just as powerfully as their new resumes sell
them.
