Confidence ... the key to Success!
Writing a Resume Can Put You Out of Your Comfort Zone
As you've been learning throughout this site, my goal is to help people identify and market their strongest skills and abilities. However, this process puts many job seekers out of their comfort zones. For example, as a secretary Cindy was frequently left in charge of her office because the President and sales staff were out in the field at least 75% of the time. Cindy was responsible for assisting all customers when they called in with problems, providing sales quotes, communicating with sales staff in the field, and managing all bookkeeping functions.

 This is the only resume book I've found that addresses self-confidence issues and that's critical to achieving maximum job search success. I've used this book with hundreds of job seekers, and learning how to control your image really does increase your confidence!

"More Than Just a Secretary"
Clearly, Cindy was much more than "just a secretary." However, when I recommended we label this experience Office Management she replied,
"I can't call it that. I recently asked for a raise and my boss told me I was just a secretary and that was all. Then, he said I didn't deserve a raise."

To help Cindy realize the level of work she was performing I pulled out want ads for several Office Management positions. This helped Cindy see she was performing Office Management duties. Before and after sections from Cindy's resume are shown below.

BEFORE:

Secretary, XYZ Company 1995 - Present
* Provided support to office staff, oversaw office procedures and
  handled phones.

AFTER:

Office Management, XYZ Company 1995 - Present
* Managed all office and customer service functions in absence   of President and
staff of 25 sales representatives who were in   the field 75% of the time, as a secretary for this leading   Northwest Marketing firm.

As you can see, Cindy's after description is entirely truthful, yet sells Cindy and her skills to the highest level. This example is typical of what 95% of job seekers can achieve when improving their resumes.

It Feels Like I'm Lying or Exaggerating
Identifying and marketing your highest level skills to match the job you want is one key to generating more interviews and higher salary offers.

However, this process puts many people of their comfort zones. During my presentations I almost always hear,
"But this sounds like I'm lying or exaggerating. What if the employer finds out that wasn't my real job title?"

Hearing this, my response is to ask these three questions, "Did you do this? Can you do this again? And, is what you're saying truthful and accurate?" If you answer, "Yes," to all three questions then market yourself as strongly as possible - which often means stretching your comfort zone.

As a resume writer, I spend from 2-4 hours with each person developing their resumes and find that time and again, that all job seekers have such feelings. Or, something like, "I don't think I really have any skills."

Having been so keenly aware of my own feelings, I realized I had a burning desire to help other people feel better about themselves and in the process, of course, help them write better resumes. I've been truly touched by so many people who have written me via e-mail and shared how much the 2nd chapter of my book has helped them.

I find it extraordinary that someone, like the man I just mentioned, will take the time (and invest his own money) to call my office and relay how much my book has meant to him. Plus go on to tell us how it has helped his mother realize she has good skills as well as recommending my site and book to several other people. Then saying that they've all come back and told him that the book is the best resume book they've ever read and they feel it's also changing their lives!
As you can imagine, his story put a huge smile of happiness on my face. I feel very privileged to be able to help other people in this way!
