When writing your sales resume - whether you're a senior sales executive or an outside sales rep, don't sit down and crank out your resume in 1-2 hours - and think you are done!! Analyze your ads and create different versions of each section of your resume to see what is strongest. Make sure your branding section as well as the body of your resume grabs each employer's or recruiter's attention in seconds. If you don't have time for all this - then hire me to write your resume! Let's graph the before section of the OUTSIDE
SALES REPRESENTATIVE compared to the new ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE section. Graphing resumes clearly explains why most resumes FAIL. When you consider Tim's new $75,000 ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE job goal, does Tim's image go up, down or match the $75,000 goal when you read his original Summary of Qualifications section ... (it drops), then your eye skips to experience and you read XYZ Electronics, Outside Sales Representative (it drops), Developed New Commercial Accounts (comes up a bit), Called on Clients (drops or stays the same), Prepared Sales Reports (drops),Achieved 45% Sales Closing Rate Compared to Industry Average of 15% (comes part way up - but has dropped too much to completely upgrade the image). |

Because none of these statements targets language related to the ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE job ad, this makes, Tim's image drops and continues to drop to a level below that of his $75,000 job goal. Tim's old resume still matches her current salary of $40,000. Now consider Tim's new branding / summary of qualifications section. Does his image go up, down or match the $75,000 goal and job ad requirements for ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE? As Tim's graph shows, you can actually see the financial value of his new resume - $35,000! Another way to look at it is - what is the cost of a weak, untargeted resume to Tim? $35,000! If you are wanting to increase your salary, and for some just land a good job, then why risk the financial loss of a long job search compared to $250 for hiring me to write your resume. Being out of work if you are making $3,000 a month and being on unemployment, may still cost you $1,000 or more per month. If you're unemployed for 3 months that's $3,000 and that increases substantially as salary levels go up. |

I can’t say this enough. If you submit a large number of resumes and your resume isn’t landing the salary and interviews you want – THEN CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY! This means that you have not properly targeted and branded your resume. Go back through your job ads and then graph the image your resume creates. If your job ads request different skills and experience - then create a resume targeted to each ad. |

I created customized resumes for myself to test my own resume success rate a few years ago. I applied to 8 jobs from Career Center Director to Career Counselor to Career Development Instructor to Technical Recruiter. I received requests for interviews from all positions over a 3-week period. A 100% response rate - that's the power of targeted, branded resumes. In today's economic decline, achieving 100% response rates may not be feasible - but if you've only been landing 1-2 interviews for every 50-100 resumes submitted and you double or triple your interview requests - those extra interviews can result in the job offer you really want and need. Very often, after I create a base resume for a client, then for a much smaller fee, I create customized branding / summary of qualifications sections so a client can end up with 3-4 targeted resumes. Again, key in landing more interviews and higher pay. |

| CREATE GREAT RESUME DESIGN | ||||||||||

When you look at your resume ... keeping your job ad requirements in mind ... ask yourself, ‘Where does my attention first, second, and then third?' Is this what you need to sell to employers in seconds? Use bolded subheads that match your experience to what employers need rather than using long lists of bulleted resume statements. Indent subheads and subhead paragraphs as illustrated in Tim's example. Use graphic lines to make your branding / summary of qualifications section stand out. Make your name smaller (in bold) than your main headings. Replace typical headings such as Objective Statement with a personal branding section like the ones above. Put your references on a separate page and address salary information only when you have to in cover letters. Use one font that’s larger in size for main headings and a smaller font size for subheadings, and a completely different font for the body of your text -- just like newspapers use. Proof, proof and proof! |
